Michael L. Kay, M.D.

Dr. Michael Kay graduated from Cornell University and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. He completed his ophthalmology training as Chief Resident at the University of Pennsylvania's Scheie Eye Institute. A board certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Kay has been in private practice in Philadelphia since 1974 and is a Senior Attending Surgeon at Wills Eye Hospital. Dr. Kay is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University. He is a past president of the Eye Section of the Philadelphia County Medical Society, and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Dr. Kay has been in the forefront of cataract and refractive surgery in Philadelphia, and performs LASIK and PRK for myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. |
Janine G. Tabas, M.D.

Dr. Janine G. Tabas graduated from Dartmouth College in 1985. She earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1989, where she served as chapter president of AOA, the National Medical Honor Society. Dr. Tabas completed her ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia in 1993, and today remains an active member of the teaching staff as an Associate Surgeon. Dr. Tabas' areas of expertise include refractive and cataract surgery, and she is experienced in LASIK and PRK for the treatment of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. A board certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Tabas is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. She herself has had LASIK refractive laser surgery and enjoys excellent vision without glasses.

Rachel M. Niknam, M.D.

Dr. Rachel Niknam a 1997 graduate of Yeshiva University earned her medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in 2002. After serving her transitional year at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Dr. Niknam completed her ophthalmology training at Drexel University - Hahnemann University Hospital in 2006. Dr. Niknam then went on to do a glaucoma fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania-Scheie Eye Institute and joined our practice upon graduation. Dr. Niknam will be practicing comprehensive ophthalmology, with her special area of interest being glaucoma, cataract and diabetic eye care. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Glaucoma Society and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. She is board certified in Ophthalmology, and is a member of the staff at Wills Eye Hospital. |
Jennifer Kim, M.D.

Dr. Jennifer Kim was born and raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia and graduated as valedictorian of her class from Harriton High School. She then went on to complete her undergraduate studies at Yale University, where she majored in music with a focus on piano performance. Following college, she returned to Philadelphia, where she went on to medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. After her internship year at the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia, she completed a three year residency in ophthalmology at the prestigious Wills Eye Institute. She went on to pursue training in cornea at the Duke Eye Center, considered one of the premier cornea fellowships in the country.
As a cornea fellowship-trained surgeon, Dr. Kim has experience in both partial and full-thickness cornea transplantion, including both DSAEK and DALK, as well as implantation of INTACs ring segments for keratoconus. She also specializes in presbyopia and astigmatism correcting lens implants as well as bladeless LASIK surgery and PRK. |
Guy Brignola, O.D.

Dr. Guy Brignola comes to our practice with many years of experience in general patient eye care, contact lens examinations, and refractive surgery consultations. He has practiced in Philadelphia for almost 10 years and has exceptional knowledge and expertise.
Dr. Brignola graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 2000 with clinical honors. He has been providing academic education to optometry students as a clinical faculty member since 2001. Dr. Brignola grew up in Bala Cynwyd, PA, and currently resides in Phoenixville, PA., with his wife, who is also an optometrist, and children. |

Lili Grunwald, M.D.

Dr Lili Grunwald completed a Medical Retina Fellowship at Duke University and a Residency in Ophthalmology at the Scheie Eye Institute, University of Pennsylvania. She received her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. She is a recipient of the ASRS Resident Excellence award and an award from the National Eye Institute of the National Institute of Health, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
As a fellowship trained specialist, Dr Lili Grunwald has expertise in diseases of the retina, in particular macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vascular diseases.
She has presented at more than 10 international conferences and has authored 9 peer reviewed articles and book chapters. She is a Diplomat and Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). |
Robert B. Penne, M.D.

Robert B. Penne, M.D. has been a member of the Wills Eye Hospital medical staff and Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery Service since 1990. He grew up in North Dakota/Minnesota and attended college at North Dakota State University where he graduated first in his class. He then attended medical school at the University of Minnesota, completed his internship at Hennepin County Medical Center, and did his ophthalmology residency at Wills Eye Hospital. After residency, he did a fellowship in Neuro-orbital disease followed by a fellowship in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Wills Eye Hospital.
Dr. Penne is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology. Locally he is past president of the Ophthalmic Club and belongs to the Greater Philadelphia Ophthalmic Society.
Dr. Penne is an Attending Surgeon at Wills Eye Institute and is director of the Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery Department. He is also co-director of the Ocular Cicatricial Pemphigoid Clinic. He has authored numerous scientific papers and book chapters. He is associate editor of the Yearbook of Ophthalmology. Dr Penne has received the Golden Apple Award (best resident teacher) at Wills Eye Institute and the Resident Teaching Award from the Temple Department of Ophthalmology. |
